How Four Community Colleges Are Turning AI Fluency Into a Working-Class Advantage

A new Google-backed initiative is helping community colleges in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Colorado, and Arkansas prepare working adults for an AI-driven economy.

When new technology arrives, it rarely distributes its benefits evenly. The pattern of digital transformation is clear: people with advanced degrees and deep networks get tools that make their jobs easier. Meanwhile, those working hourly jobs or trying to break into new industries face changing hiring requirements and the feeling of being left behind.

Artificial intelligence threatens to repeat this cycle on a massive scale. But this time, some critical public institutions are refusing to let it happen.

Community colleges sit at the intersection of neighborhood life and workforce training, serving populations most vulnerable to economic shifts. As of July 1, 2026, four institutions are taking a major step to ensure their students shape the future of work, rather than just reacting to it.

The Challenge of AI Readiness

The AI + Durable Skills Work-Based Learning Design Challenge is a mouthful of a title for a practical mission. Spearheaded by the nonprofit Education Design Lab, partnered with Riipen, and backed by Google.org, the initiative is built around a single premise: working adults, parenting learners, and first-generation college students need hands-on AI experience right now.

Four schools make up the inaugural cohort: Community College of Aurora in Colorado, Hudson County Community College in New Jersey, East Arkansas Community College, and Roxbury Community College in Boston.

These aren’t wealthy private universities; they are neighborhood lifelines where a single mother earns a nursing credential or a first-generation immigrant builds a business. By bringing AI fluency into these classrooms, the initiative treats artificial intelligence as a fundamental literacy—like reading or math—rather than a specialized luxury.

“Community colleges are on the front lines of the AI workforce readiness challenge,” Lisa Larson, CEO of Education Design Lab, said in the project’s launch announcement. She pointed out that non-traditional students are highly vulnerable to the impacts of labor market disruption. “These four colleges stepped forward because they recognize the role higher education must play in shaping the conversation about AI at work, not just responding to it. They are building something the whole field can learn from.”

Why AI Needs “Durable Skills”

Fascinatingly, the initiative doesn’t ask students to become software engineers or focus on the highly technical math behind machine learning.

Instead, it pairs AI fluency with “durable skills”—uniquely human abilities algorithms can’t replicate, like complex problem-solving, empathy, adaptability, and clear communication.

Education Design Lab cites labor market research showing demand for AI literacy skills has grown by over 70 percent compared to 2025. Employers desperately need people who use these tools safely. At a late 2025 Harvard Business School conference, Google’s Lisa Gevelber shared a telling statistic: more than 70 percent of employers say they would rather hire someone with less experience who understands AI than someone with more experience.

Employers also realize AI is only as good as the human directing it. If an algorithm generates a proposal in ten seconds, the competitive advantage isn’t typing speed. It’s the ability to read that proposal, spot strategic flaws, correct the tone, and present it persuasively.

Using Riipen’s platform, the colleges will connect students with real employers for work-based projects. Students won’t just read about AI; they’ll use it to solve actual business problems, practicing durable human skills alongside the technology.

A Strategy for the Working Class

In his community workshops, Future Leaders in AI’s Micah Berkley notes that technical shifts hit hardest where resources are thinnest. When local nonprofits or small businesses lack budgets for expensive consultants, they have to figure out the future on their own.

This initiative is a structural response to that problem, acknowledging we can’t wait for AI literacy to trickle down from the tech sector.

These colleges serve a cross-section of working-class America. Hudson County operates in a diverse, densely populated area of New Jersey. Roxbury is a historic pillar for Boston’s Black community. East Arkansas serves a rural population where economic mobility often requires leaving the region. Aurora serves a rapidly diversifying suburban population outside Denver.

Equipping these students with AI fluency changes the local job market’s power dynamic. When local businesses adopt AI, they won’t have to import talent from expensive coastal tech hubs. The expertise will already be in their own neighborhoods.

This reflects a growing national trend. We’re seeing similar public investments in the Midwest, where Chicago’s community colleges are building free on-ramps to AI skills. Public education systems are realizing AI literacy is a civic necessity.

What Civic Organizations Can Learn

While focused on higher education, this core philosophy offers a blueprint for anyone doing community work. Whether you run a neighborhood association, manage food bank volunteers, or organize an advocacy group, there are practical lessons here.

Centering the human element is crucial. The focus on durable skills reminds us AI shouldn’t replace human connection. If you’re exploring AI for community organizations, your goal should be automating tedious administrative work so your team has more time for relationship building. You don’t want a machine making strategic decisions; you want it handling data entry so you can focus on empathy and leadership.

Treat AI as a collaborative tool, not a solo magic trick. The work-based model succeeds because it forces students to use AI in a social, professional context, explaining their process to employers. When introducing these tools to your team, do it collaboratively. Share successful prompts, discuss mistakes, and build a shared understanding of what the technology does well.

Finally, fluency comes from practical application. These students aren’t learning abstract theories; they’re doing real projects. To build AI literacy in your community, find a specific, annoying problem and solve it together. Use a chatbot to draft a grant proposal or organize volunteer schedules. Fluency comes from practice.

The Road Ahead

The AI + Durable Skills Work-Based Learning Design Challenge runs through August 2027, with pilot learning experiences launching in January 2027. Participating colleges will receive implementation grants and expert guidance to build their programs.

The ultimate goal goes beyond these four campuses. Education Design Lab plans to publish an open-access library of tools, design criteria, and sample curricula. Any institution, from a rural technical school to an urban workforce center, will be able to adapt these blueprints for their neighborhoods.

We’re at the beginning of a massive economic transition. The tools we use to write, organize, and create are changing fundamentally. If we leave adaptation entirely to the private sector, we know exactly who will benefit and who will be left behind.

Intervention must happen at the community level—in evening classes where tired parents build better lives, in rural extension offices, and in urban neighborhood centers. By putting AI directly into the hands of the working class, these colleges aren’t just preparing students for the future of work. They are ensuring their students have a hand in designing it.
